Happy Dessert Day

Today our USA students are celebrating National Dessert Day. For those of you who have been working on commonly confused words as part of your spelling lists will know this is a sweet pudding that comes after your main savoury dish and not a place with lots of sand.

We thought about joining them and have asked for recipes ideas for puddings made and eaten at home that we could make a list for and then we could cook for D.T.

So far, we have had a lot of variations on a theme with pumpkin pies and apple pies from our USA learners.

From our English learners we have Bakewell Tart, Bread and Butter Pudding, Spotted Dick and any number of fruit crumbles.

One of our New Zealand contributors has offered up Kiwi Pavlova.

Our Colombian learner has suggested Cuajada com Melae (best described as fresh cheese smothered with melted panela which translates as melted cane sugar - sort of cheese cake without the breadcrumb base)

Arroz Doce (sort of Portuguese rice pudding) that his Nanny makes, was the favourite of our Portuguese learner. It is really important that his Baba makes it, otherwise it is not good enough!

Honey Cake known as Medovigk from Ukraine also had to be made at home by Granny otherwise is didn't taste right.

Along with Halva a sort of set semolina pudding from Greece. Again, the magic ingredient is who makes this dish.

In fact, all the recipes except one pudding (dessert) that was suggested were pudding to make at home. The exception being Bastani from Iran which is a commercial prepared ice-cream with saffron, rose water and pistachios. Which I think is fair enough as icecream is most defiantly one of my favourite puddings and a little tricky to get the texture right.

We are happy to receive any further dessert ideas from you so we can celebrate his day next year with more notice. You can share your ideas here, or on the website in the forum or when I visit you.
