Homeschool Garden Club - What Is Feeding Our Bees This Week? Week 2, 3 and 4 September 2023

We are now half way through the first half term of the 2023-24 academic. You may remember we have voted to make a visual record of what is feeding our bees each week. We have fallen at the second week!

The second week was so wet that we had to cancel the Homeschool Garden Club due to the weather. We did however manage to get one very special photograph of a bee trying to get out of the rain.

Week three and many of our Homeschool Garden Club members tested positive for Covid-19 or had come down with a heavy cold, so we had to cancel again.

Week four and we have had to pick our day carefully around Storm Agnes this week. Once we got out in to the garden there were lots to do and many more flowers feeding the pollinators than first thought. Here is what we found this week.

We are using this pictorial evidence to be inclusive, not everyone taking part in the survey can write, very well at the moment, and some have not learnt all about graphs nor the name of the plants, as yet. Once we know what we have, we are going to gather the information together in to charts and graphs (I can't help bring a bit of sneaky maths in to the garden!) and see where we have gaps in the garden over the course of the year. We will be using both our mathematical knowledge and IT skills to collect and present the data. I am looking forward to finding out the results!

This week I have sent one of our younger KS2 homeschool gardeners - around the garden, to capture the flowers that the bees and pollinators are visiting, this week. I don't think the exposure on their camera was set right, therefore the photographs were a little too dark and we had to retake them all over again. Sadly on the first round they had managed to capture a number of visiting bees. there are a few here can you spot them? There were lots of wasps around because the apples and raspberries are ready and we need to pick them. Can you identify the plants from you work in the garden and support material packs?
