The Orchard Gate

As we reach the end of our first half-term, there is so much to celebrate in the week's The Orchard Gate.

We began with 30 families and now have 44. A warm welcome to the 14 families who have joined us! Thank you, too, to the mums who have been encouraging, supporting and gently chivvying reluctant learners along. Your patience and effort matter.

This half-term’s achievements have taken many forms. One of our new girls couldn’t join the museum visit, so explored virtually and drew a wonderful prehistoric horse. Another produced a beautiful batch of individual meringues from our Pudding Week recipes.

One young man brought me into an alien adventure through models and photographs sent throughout the day. Rather like a radio drama, the story arrived in instalments. I loved his imagination and the surprise of discovering what happened next. I could ask questions and become part of the unfolding story—what a wonderful way to share ideas!

There have also been some important steps towards independence. Two lads who had found working alone difficult began looking at their work before the lesson and tackling the units they thought looked manageable. They discovered they could do them all and completed their set work without my help. That growing belief in “I can do this” is something worth celebrating.

Study buddy groups are also coming together independently, with learners choosing to support one another. Knowing how to work together is a valuable skill alongside learning to work independently.

For those balancing learning with sporting commitments, planning ahead is another important step. Some of our young people already manage this very successfully. When training or a competition is coming up, look at the week ahead and decide when your learning will happen. A little preparation helps you give both your sport and your learning the attention they deserve.

We finish today, Friday 23 October, and return to learning on Monday 2 November.

Thank you to the young people and parents for their thoughtful vote on our term dates. October is certainly turning out to be wet and cold, so making good use of these autumn weeks for learning feels sensible, while keeping more flexibility for the summer months.

For now, enjoy your half-term break.

Thank you for the effort, imagination and kindness you have brought to Orchard.
