Summer Fun with Games!
Summer is here again, and that means long days full of sunshine and play! Over the holidays, we’ve got five exciting games to share that will get you outside, running around, and having fun with your family, friends, and Study Buddies.
This week’s game is a classic favourite… Fruit Salad!
How to Play Fruit Salad (for everyone 5+)
What you need:
A big group of players (at least 6 is best).
Enough chairs for everyone minus one (for example, if 8 people are playing, you need 7 chairs).
Setting up:
Place the chairs in a circle, facing inwards.
Everyone sits on a chair, except one person who stands in the middle.
Choosing your fruit:
Go around the circle and give each player the name of a fruit (like apple, banana, orange, grape).
You’ll need at least two players for each fruit.
How to play:
The person in the middle calls out the name of one fruit, for example, “Apples!”
All the players who are that fruit must quickly jump up and run to find a new seat.
The person in the middle also tries to sit down on one of the empty chairs.
Whoever is left without a seat becomes the new caller in the middle.
The twist – Fruit Salad! If the person in the middle calls “Fruit Salad!”, everyone has to leap up and swap seats. Lots of running, lots of laughter!
Tips to Make It More Fun
Silly fruit names: Instead of “apple” or “banana,” try funny ones like “watermelon wobble” or “grape escape.”
No going back: Make a rule that you can’t run back to the chair you just came from.
Super speed round: Call out fruits really quickly to make the game extra tricky.
Mix it up: Swap fruits halfway through so players have to remember their new fruit name.
Challenge mode: The caller can do a funny action (like hopping or clapping) before everyone is allowed to move.
Older Kids’ Version (Ages 9–12)
Want to make Fruit Salad even more challenging? Try these variations:
Memory Mix-Up: Instead of naming fruits, give everyone numbers or tricky categories (like animals, sports, or superheroes). The caller has to remember who belongs to which group.
Double Call: The caller can shout out two fruits at once—those players have to cross over and find each other’s seats.
Fast Swap: Everyone has only three seconds to move once a fruit is called. Count down out loud to keep the pressure on!
No Touch Rule: Players aren’t allowed to bump into chairs until they’ve found one—that makes it a test of speed and control.
These versions keep older players thinking fast, moving quickly, and laughing just as much!
Healthy August Tip
Games like Fruit Salad aren’t just fun—they’re healthy too! Running, jumping, and moving around gets your heart beating faster, which makes it stronger. Plus, it gives you more energy for the rest of the day.
