Can I Homeschool My Child Even If I'm Not a Teacher?

This is probably the question I am asked more than any other.

"I'm not a teacher. Can I really homeschool my child?"

My answer is always the same. Yes! In fact, most of the parents at Orchard are not teachers.

You don't need to know everything. You don't need to stand at the front of a classroom. You don't need to recreate school at home. What you do need is a willingness to learn alongside your child.

You already have the most important qualification to homeschool your child

Nobody knows your child better than you do. You know what makes them laugh, what worries them, when they're tired, when they're interested and when they need encouragement.

A teaching qualification can't replace that.

"But what if they ask me something I don't know?"

Then you say one of the most powerful words a child can hear: "Let's find out together."

Children don't need adults who know everything.

They need adults who are curious enough to keep learning.

You don't have to teach every lesson to homeschool your child

At Orchard, we've designed our lessons so that families can work through them together.

Each lesson explains why the learning matters before moving on to the activity. That helps children become more independent and gives parents confidence too.

Home isn't school

One of the joys of homeschooling is that learning doesn't stop at a desk.

It happens while cooking, gardening, reading together, visiting museums, measuring ingredients or talking on a walk. Some of the best learning happens when life and education come together.

So... can you homeschool?

If you care about your child, are willing to ask questions and are prepared to learn together, then yes—you probably can.

You don't need all the answers before you begin.

You just need to be willing to take the first step.

Still wondering whether homeschooling is right for your family?

I'd be very happy to have an informal chat. There's no pressure and no obligation—just the chance to ask your questions and find out whether Orchard Homeschooling could be the right fit for your child.
