Word of the Week

Acknowledge (verb)

Meaning something accepted as fact or admitted as a truth or the existence of something or someone.

Example of using it in a sentence "The difficulties of dyslexic with spelling is acknowledged by this teacher "

It can also mean: the recognition of the importance or quality of something or someone.

Example of using it in a sentence “The learners have begun to acknowledge the teaching here is very different to that at school.”

This comes from the Old English (around the 15th century) and is made up in two parts ‘ac’ which is the ‘to’ part of the verb. Some of us are learning about the formal gerund or present participle this week! The second part is ‘knowledge’ so we get “to know” which in those days meant confessing to knowing or understanding something.

Spelling tip: we can use our spelling knowledge here with the ck combination at the beginning by breaking it up.

ac + know + l + edge

Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
