refer (verb)
Meaning –mentioned or alluded to.
Example of using it in a sentence: "My mum never referred to the incident again”
Synonyms: mentioned, touched on, spoke about, wrote about
It can also mean: passed on to a higher body for a decision.
Example of using it in a sentence: "My dad has been referred to the consultant by the GP.”
Spelling Tip – those of you have been with us for a while will have spotted that this is a Latin word with the prefix ‘re’ meaning ‘again’ and the root meaning ‘mentioned` or ‘spoke of’. In other words, “It was not spoken of again.” Because this is a ‘cvc’ word you do double the r to make the past tense ‘referred.’
re + f + er
Use the word as many times throughout the week as you can. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
