Word of the Week

Amateur (noun)

Meaning a person who enjoys a studying or sport as a past time with others. Someone who does not get paid to do their past time.

Example of using it in a sentence "Graham enjoys being an amateur actor and takes part in local plays."

It can also be used in a negative way: it can be used to show that something has not been done in a professional way or it has been done in a poor way.

The root word comes from the French meaning somebody who loves what they do. It is because of its French root we have that very awkward ‘eur’ ending, which as spellers were are unfamiliar with.

Spelling tip: we are going to learn this word like this.

am + at + e + ur

Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
