Leaves are softly descending in shades of gold, amber, and red, while bulbs are being planted in preparation for the coming year. At the Orchard Training Club, we are celebrating the Great British Baking Week, National Pudding Week, and International Food Week, all featuring recipes that might include cinnamon.
Cinnamon is one of the 12 foods we are examining in our year long project of food we cannot grow here in Uk but use and eat all the time.

3. Chocolate
4. Pineapple

7. Vanilla
8. Banana
9. Oranges
10. Black pepper
11. Cinnamon
12. Turmeric
We will be considering them from very different curriculum points of view for example from the environmental viewpoint - air miles, from geography – the original origin, from a historic investigation what did we use before this food reached the UK shores. Finally, imaging in a Design and Technology perspective if we could we chose not to buy that food or if we could no-longer purchase that food: how can we replace it in recipes? We will then try out some well-loved recipes with a replacement that we could grow in the Orchard Training Homeschool Garden.
Cinnamon has coumarin, which can damage the liver when ingested in large amounts. Some cinnamon powders may also lead to skin irritation. Thus, we will explore portion sizes of food items and ways to ensure the safety of the food we eat. Additionally, we will delve into the history of food tampering. Given the popularity of cinnamon buns at the Orchard Training Cookery Club, we will examine bread adulteration, in Britain, during the Victorian era.
