Home School Health Education - Swimming

Now the days are getting shorter, colder and wetter we move inside with our home school Health Education turns to swimming.

Learning how to swim is a life-saving skill. If you are not already proficient in swimming, now is the perfect time to enroll in lessons. Swimming provides a comprehensive workout involving all parts of the body through various strokes. The water's resistance challenges the muscles, making it an excellent cardiovascular activity that also helps in muscle building and toning, particularly in the upper body. Additionally, swimming contributes to cardiovascular health by engaging the heart and lungs in supporting the body's movements.

Swimming is suitable for those who prefer a more relaxed activity and want to avoid intense workouts or excessive sweating. Additionally, it is gentle on the body as you are buoyant in water, making it an excellent option for individuals with injuries or joint pain.

Our goal is to complete Swim 21 - can we collectively swim 21 kilometers? This is the span between France and England, crossing the English Channel. Given the cold and wet winter weather outside, now is a great opportunity to move our exercise indoors.

Week 1 – Preparation

Our home school training plan will help you prepare for the challenge if you haven't been in a pool for some time.

  • It's advisable to wear flip flops or similar footwear around the pool to prevent injuries and reduce the risk of conditions like verrucaes.

  • Failure to rinse off chlorine immediately after swimming can cause fabric to fade. Make sure to rinse your swimsuit in fresh water after each swim.

  • The chemicals in the pool water can have a negative impact on your skin. After swimming, take a shower, wash with soap, dry thoroughly, and apply moisturizer.

  • Bring a drink with you to the pool to stay hydrated, as it can be difficult to tell if you are dehydrated or not.

  • For a post-swimming snack after a long swim, consider having some good old GORP.
