Acquire (verb)

Meaning – to buy or obtain an asset or object for oneself

Example of using it in a sentence "I managed to acquire all the text books I needed for the course second-hand."

Synonyms: obtain, come by, come to have, get, receive, gain, earn, win, come into, come in for, take possession of, take receipt of, be given;

It can also mean – to learn or develop a new skill, habit or quality.

Example of using it in a sentence "I have acquired the skills to spell all the Year 7 spellings."

This word started out as a prefix ‘ad’ meaning “to” added to the root word ‘quaerere’ meaning “seek” in Latin and became ‘acquirere’ meaning “to get in addition” over time the spelling has changed a little as it travelled through the Old French and Middle English. In the 16th century we ended up with the spelling we know today.
