Word of the Week

commemorate (verb)

Meaning – to recall and show respect for someone for something thing.

Example of using it in a sentence: "November the 11th is a day when we commemorate those lost in war.”

Spelling Tip – this word is a mash up of three ideas, the prefix ‘com’ meaning a group coming together and the Latin word for ‘mindful’ and it has become to mean 'being brought together to remember’. In the UK, we come together on the 11th November each year to be mindful of the cost of war. However, it is not just the dead we remember. We also acknowledge those living with physical and mental injures and it’s not just the soldiers, but also their families and our civilian communities damaged by war. The suffix 'ate' meaning 'possessing'. This memory of past wars has become 'the possession of the nation' not just the few who actually remember a particular war. So, we are going to learn to spell this word like this.

com + memor + ate

Use the word as many times throughout the week as you can. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
