Word of the Week
Disappoint
Meaning: to fail to live up to the hopes or expectations of someone
Example of using it in a sentence “We will disappoint everyone if we cancel this event."
The root word comes from the Old French meaning to not appoint somebody to a position. The used the word ‘appoint’ back then to mean “to give the job to” and by adding the French ‘dis’ meaning ‘not’ it means “not to give the job to.” Now, we use it to mean someone “has not delivered.”
Spelling tip: we are going to help ourselves by breaking up the word like this.
dis + ap + point
Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
