Orchard Training Homeschool Garden Club - Bananas

A perfect moment for a snug indoor activity in the potting shed, as the garden is enveloped in fog or frost. We are nearing the completion of our project on foods we frequently consume but cannot cultivate here in the United Kingdom.

1.     Tea

2.     Coffee

3.     Chocolate

4.     Pineapple

5.     Mango

6.     Avocado

7.     Vanilla

8.     Banana

9.     Oranges

10.  Black pepper

11.  Cinnamon

12.  Turmeric

We will examine them from various curriculum perspectives, such as the environmental angle—considering air miles, the geographical aspect—tracing the original origin, and from a historical viewpoint—exploring what was used before this food arrived in the UK. Lastly, from a Design and Technology perspective, we will consider alternatives if we choose not to buy that food or if it becomes unavailable: how can we substitute it in recipes? We will then experiment with popular recipes using a replacement that we could cultivate in the Orchard Training Homeschool Garden.

This month, we are focusing on bananas. Back in March, when we were celebrating Banana Bread week we did some experiments with alternatives to banana when cooking and tried apply and sweet potato. When not take a look at thoses blogs by usings the search bar.

The banana trade faces numerous issues, including water and soil contamination, soil erosion, deforestation, and labor exploitation. A major concern is Fusarium TR4, a fungal disease that poses a threat to the fruit's availability. This month, we will be considering genetically modified plants.
