Word of the Week
exercise
Â
Meaning: something done for a purpose
Â
Example of using it in a sentence “Lexie completed this exercise on time"
Â
This Latin word with its prefix ‘ex-’ means thoroughly, started out as word meaning doing something that was thoroughly physical – sweaty! By the Medieval period, it means keeping busy, keep working at or kept busy, meaning to train, or practice. This is why we use it in school to mean both doing sports, keeping fit and doing a mental practice of school work – an English exercise or maths exercise. Â
Â
Spelling tip: we are breaking the word up like this just as we say it.
Â
                                                              ex + er + cise
Â
Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
