This Weeks Music Play List

On 18 March the Eurovision Song Contest was cancelled for the first time in its 64-year history and the thought of missing the best music event of the year made the Month of May look a little flat.

After Ducan Laurence won the 2019 contest with Arcade, the Netherlands was excited to host Eurovision for the first time in 40 years. Rotterdam's slogan for the contest was Open Up but its Ahoy Arena had to close down to be converted in to a hospital to deal with Covid-19. But following government advice they were able to sing in the empty hall as the hospital was being built.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the events with the biggest TV audience in the world and is a massive hit with our learners.

The BBC broadcasted last night the Eurovision: Come Together, which saw the public vote for their favourites, on the night that this year's song contest was due to take place. The 19-strong song list was compiled by Eurovision experts and broadcasters.

ABBA’s ‘Waterloo’ won. The Swedish foursome won it in 1974 in Brighton. The track, which topped the UK charts and set them on their way to fame, went on to sell nearly 6m copies.

Later on, the BBC also joined with other European broadcasters for Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light, to honour all 41 songs which would have competed this year.

Some of this year's songs would have been eliminated at the semi-finals, where the entrants are normally whittled down to 26 but the semis were also cancelled.

None of the 2020 songs will be carried over to next year. Instead, countries will select new entrants for the 2021 contest.

Several countries have confirmed they will send the same acts next year to give the artists a second chance, but they will have to perform different songs.

Here is the full list of the Eurovision 41 songs from 2020 and it is a great play list!

Stuck for what to do this week – well this will take over 2 hours to listen to and will count towards your Music Appreciation in your evidence folder. Listen to the whole play list and then vote for your best. I will be collecting in the votes over the course of the week and we will know who the winner is next weekend. Under Eurovision rules you can’t vote for your own country – so if you are English you can’t vote for England etc. But it is ok because we have enough none English learners to balance this off.
