Word of the Week

Category

Meaning a group of people or things gathered together because they share a characteristic.

Example of using it in a sentence "Please sort all the shapes with 4 sides into the quadrilateral category."

The roots of this word come from the Greek. It meant originally accuser or accusation, where something was pointed out – what we would now call a characteristic. For example, “all of the cats are wearing blue hats are the gory makers.” We have separated the small group from the larger group by the fact they all wear blue hats.

Spelling tip: When you spell this word emphasise the ‘eeeeee’ in the middle so we don’t end up catagory or catigory.

cat + e + gory

Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
