desperate (adjective)


Meaning – a feeling of or showing a hopeless sense that a situation is so bad as to be impossible to deal with alone.

Example of using it in a sentence: “The recent floods left the community desperate for help.

It can also mean: - having a great need or desire for something

Example of using it in a sentence: “It is very cold outside, I am in desperate need of a hot chocolate.

Spelling Tip – The Latin root word means ‘without hope’. In England, by the 12th century, it became to mean ‘in despair’. However, we are not without hope or in despair - we can learn to spell this word!

Use the word as many times throughout the week as you can. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
