Homeschool Garden Club - Feeding Birds in Autumn

As the weather turns, e are noticing a lot of changes in the Orchard Training Garden Club. We have had the joy of watching the birds nesting in our nest boxes and their company all summer long at the bird feeding tables. However, as the days get shorter and the weather get colder many of our garden visitors will be migrating. Some will not and that is why it is more important than ever to look after the ones with have decided to stay.

Here at the Orchard Training Garden Club we are looking into the ways we can support birds during this season, from food and roosting boxes to ensuring a reliable water supply.

One of the things we have chosen to do over the time the Orchard Training Garden Club has been running is to plan for the birds with our planting of bushes with berries to help feed the birds at this time of the year. With a selection of evergreen and non evergreen providing vital shelter. We will be having a session making bird fat balls, sign up if you want to take part.

While you are out and about on your late autumn walks look out for the birds taking the place of the ones who are leaving. take your spotter books with you and see if you can identify the swans, geese, redwings, waxwings, ramblings and fieldfares.

We will be sure to make sure there is water and if there is frost overnight we need to check that the water is not frozen.

We will be cleaning out nest boxes, washing them well and disinfect them in one of our sessions. That way, they’re ready for birds to roost in. But don’t worry if birds don’t use them this winter for shelter; at least they’re ready for the next lot of chicks next spring.
