Word of the Week

Parliament (noun)

Meaning –The place in the UK where the highest legislature takes place, consisting of the Sovereign (King or Queen), the House of the Lords, and the House of Commons.

Example of using it in a sentence: "Parliament has had a lot of problems solving Brexit.”

It can also mean – a group of rooks or owls

Example of using it in a sentence: "A group of owls is called a parliament.”

Spelling Tip – ‘ia’ is not a spelling rule or pattern in English even if it does appear in over 4000 words. So, we can split the ‘i’ away from the ‘a’ like this to hear the long ‘a’ sound. Just remember the ‘i’ has a long ‘ee’ sound and not a short ‘I’ or long ‘y’ sound.
