desperate (adjective)

Meaning – a feeling of or showing a hopeless sense that a situation is so bad as to be impossible to deal with alone.

Example of using it in a sentence: The recent floods left the community desperate for help.

It can also mean: - having a great need or desire for something

Example of using it in a sentence: It is very cold outside, I am in desperate need of a hot chocolate.

Spelling Tip – The Latin root word means ‘without hope’. In England, by the 12th century, it became to mean ‘in despair’. However, we are not without hope or in despair - we can learn to spell this word!
