special (adjective)
Meaning –something is better, greater or otherwise different from what is usual.
Synonyms: exceptional, particular, unusual, marked, singular, uncommon, noteworthy, remarkable, outstanding or unique.
Example of using it in a sentence: "My parents always try to make the Christmas period special.”
It can also mean: belonging specifically to a particular person or place.
Synonyms: distinctive, individual, particular, specific, certain, peculiar and definite.
Example of using it in a sentence: “Windsor town has tried to keep its special small castle town character despite all the tourists.”
Spelling Tip – here we have a choice between the suffixes ‘cial’ and ‘tial’ spelling families. We need to remember that to check the letter that goes directly before the suffix. If it is a vowel then it is ‘cial’ and if it is a consonant its ‘tial’. Here it is an ‘e’.
