Word of the Week

According (adverb)

Meaning something stated by someone or in a document.

Example of using it in a sentence "According to one famous influencer the world is flat but according to NASA the world is a sphere. I believe NASA! "

It can also mean: depending upon something

Example of using it in a sentence “The level of homework set is according to which year group you are in and how well you are at the time.”

It comes from the Latin word ‘accord’ which is made up in two parts ‘ac’ which is the ‘to’ part of the verb. Some of us are learning about the formal gerund or present participle this week! The second part is ‘cord’ Latin for ‘heart’. Over time, in Old French the root word became to mean reconciled – "to be of one mind."

Spelling tip: Sound it out and remember that there are 2 c’s.

Ac + cord + ing

Use the word as many times throughout the week. This can be verbally, in your written work or listen out for other people using it.
