Meaning –relating to an authority or public and its activities and responsibilities

Example of using it in a sentence: "The prime minister’s official engagements.”

Synonyms: ceremonial, solemn, formal

It can also be used as a noun

Meaning –a person holding public office or having official duties for example a police officer, a union leader, a councillor of the County Council

Example of using it in a sentence: "The official at the rally ordered us down a side road away from the danger.”

Synonyms: officer, administrator, executive, appointee

Spelling Tip – the four letters are easy you can hear them. all you have to do is to remember that it belongs to the ‘-cial’ and not the ‘-tial’ family. Saying “Officially the suffix ‘-cial’ follows a root word ending in a vowel”
